2011 DOUBLE HELLEBORES

Helleborus Winter Jewels™ Onyx Odyssey

The weather over the previous couple of years has been hard on gardens.  The last two winters were brutal, and the summer of 2010 topped the charts for heat and drought.  This summer was a challenge with heat and drought followed by ceaseless rain.  But through it all my hybrid hellebores have looked pristine, even the plants that received no supplemental water in the 2010 drought.  You have to love a plant that’s tough enough to shine through these weather conditions.  Hybrid hellebores are also evergreen, deer resistant, easy to grow, and bloom from February often into May with dozens of large colorful flowers.

Customers are always asking for double-flowered hellebores, and my fall 2010 offer of the extremely high quality double series called Winter Jewels™ sold out so I am offering them again this fall.  I have grown several Winter Jewels™ selections in my own garden and am very impressed with their reliably gorgeous flowers and their vigorous growth habit.  In fact, I planted ten very small plants late last fall and not only did they live (contrary to my expectations), but they thrived and two even bloomed.  Given that experience, I would expect most of the plants I am offering now to bloom this coming spring.

The plants available are pictured above and below and can be purchased for the special fall season price of $15 for a 2 qt. pot, an incredible deal!

To Order: If you would like to order, please send an email to carolynsshadegardens@verizon.net with the plant name, quantity, your name, and telephone number.  Supplies are limited so order early.  You will receive an email confirming your order and amount owed.

Pick up will be at the Second Annual Double Hellebore Pick Up Party (date TBA) where light refreshments will be served and you will have first choice of the plants to be offered at my fall open house on September 24.  Additional pick up times for customers who can’t make the party will be available.
